Cullendulla Mangrove Walk, Batemans Bay NSW

Just a quick blog today. Only four hours drive south of Sydney lies Batemans bay in the picturesque Eurobodalla region, somewhere I’d never visited before. It was lovely weather and of course found a walk to do! The kids didn’t want anything too strenuous and fortunately the region offers many options!

The Cullendulla Mangrove walk was nice and flat! At the start we had the choice of following the track or walking parallel to it on the beach. We chose the beach and the kids were rewarded with many curly shells for the collection!

As we walked along a beach there were a lot of trees along the shore pushed over facing inland. It kinda looked like a strong surge had swept over them but pulled them out from the base on the way out. Very interesting given the current calmness of the water. A gentleman was scouring the beach for bait and another gentleman was in the water waist high fishing.

At the end of the beach we went inland briefly that popped back out onto a sandy inlet, low tide turning it into a wide expanse of sand with only a small dribble of river remaining. There were lots of little crab holes and, if we stood still we could see lots of crabs moving! They were quite big too. Eight legged and fast! It occurred to be that if they were spiders I would be in my own horror story but somehow it being crabs was ok??!!

Further up we headed inland again until the track turned to boardwalk and passed through mangroves. These mangroves popped straight out of the sand. Other ones I’ve seen were in muddier sand but these just popped straight out of the beach sand. The boardwalk ended and provided a nice view up and down the inlet. There were lots of little fish in the water.

The way back took us through the bush and was quite nice. We returned to the beach and rocky area and could see that the tide had come in quite a bit. We had taken our time and had spent about an hour and a half exploring the area and we were back at the car feeling pretty fulfilled.

I should like to return to the area and do some of the long coastal walks. I think it would be beautiful in any weather. You can get a taste of what the area has to offer in the pictures below. Thanks for reading!
