Graffiti Tunnel Bushwalk

Feeling a bit housebound I opened the AllTrails app and played with the map, as you do, to find a new short walk that I could hopefully do with the kids. I found a perfect one in Asquith that offered a bit of exploration and adventure!

This walk would take us through the bush and down to a tunnel under the M1 motorway that permitted a small creek to flow from one side to the other.

At the beginning of the walk there was a “rare plants” sign so we would have to keep to the path.

The other was strewn with webs and it was a little frustrating at first, but they soon cleared up. The trail sloped downwards and we were soon surrounded by ferns. There were a couple of different types and my daughter was convinced one of them was one of the rare plants the signpost had warned us about, but I’m certain it was just another common fern.

After crossing a barely running creek my son managed to collect a leech. They seem to love him. I rarely ever have them on me but they always get him and he’s really annoyed about it! I don’t know how folks go swimming in waterholes and not end up covered in the things.

The trail seemed to end in an opening in a fence and we could see the tunnel below us. We thought it would be impossible to get down to it but we found a way. It was steep but the kids have been out here on enough bushbashing adventures to know how to handle that.

The tunnel allowed a small creek to pass under a highway and the creek itself was pretty. Unfortunately there were lots of discarded spray paint cans littering the water. They had been put to good use though. Some of the art on the tunnel was quite good, including a giant Daffy Duck. Photos at the end.

The kids wanted to walk thru to the other side. We used another phone as a flashlight. The graffiti art covered the length of the tunnel and there were some interesting faces that loomed out at us in the darkness. The other end of the tunnel was very picturesque. There was a small tree growing in the middle with water flowing either side. It was like we were emerging out into a lost world. I expected dinosaurs. There were none:(

We went back thru the tunnel loving every minute of it. It felt like we were in an old famous five book exploring secret places.

I found on the map a quicker way to return. It passed through a large cleared area that the kids seemed to enjoy. There was a birds nest and some lovely plants. It felt like a place one could set up and read a book or just relax.

Before we knew it we were back at the road. You wouldn’t travel far to go on this walk but for locals it certainly provides a fun little adventure. The kids seemed to enjoy this one!

As the kids get older it’s getting harder to get them out on adventures with dear old Dad, so I let them film it for their little YouTube channel. Whatever works hey? You can watch the whole thing via this link. They would love it if you could like it and maybe subscribe too!

  1. Discovered your blog while researching doing the great north walk by sections. Love your content (especially how you described the climbs!!). Also impressed that you are not obsessed with gears (most hiking/backpacking YouTubers are way over obsessive about their gears (mostly from US cottage companies) which while I find interesting to watch are not that useful to us oz). Keep walking!

    1. Oh I certainly want all that gear! But I am happy with what I have. I think I usually describe climbs with a lot of groans:) but somehow manage to get thru them. I’m hoping to tackle another long trail next year. I like my little tent home so I need to take it out again. Thanks for reading!
